Modern fighter jets use radar systems and heat sensors to detect enemy aircraft in the sky. There are mainly two types of targeting systems:

  1. Radar-Guided Missiles – The jet sends out radar waves that bounce off the enemy aircraft. When the radar detects the reflected waves, it calculates the exact position, speed, and direction of the target. Once locked, the missile can track that target using radar signals.

  2. Heat-Seeking Missiles – These missiles don’t use radar. Instead, they look for the heat coming from an enemy plane’s engines. When the pilot locks onto that heat signature, the missile automatically follows it after launch.


🔐 What Does “Target Lock” Mean?

A target lock means the attacking aircraft’s radar or sensor system has perfectly tracked the enemy. This gives the missile the “green light” to follow the target — even if the pilot doesn’t keep it in sight anymore.
In short, once the lock is achieved, the missile knows exactly where to go.

  • Sharp Maneuvers: Fast turns, dives, or sudden climbs can break the missile’s tracking lock.

  • Electronic Jamming: Some advanced jets use electronic systems to jam the enemy’s radar.

If the pilot reacts quickly and uses the right countermeasures, there’s still a chance to escape — even after the target is locked.
